So, you've flipped over your Debriefs and seen the words ‘Made in Turkey’.
You’ve probably had a bit of a scratch of the head, thinking, "An Aussie brand? Making daks there?"
It’s a fair question. And it’s a story worth telling, because it’s pretty much the heart of what we do.
When I first kicked this whole Debriefs thing off, everyone had advice.
"Just get 'em made in China."
"It’s cheaper. Faster. Everyone does it."
And yeah, they’re not wrong. If you just want to shift boxes of so-so gear, China's your ticket.
Any bloke with a laptop can find a factory on Alibaba. Easy.
You'll have a container load of undies on the water before you can say "mass production."
But that was never the game plan for Debriefs.
I didn’t pour my life savings into this to be just another forgettable name.
My mission was simple: create the best damn undies Aussie blokes have ever worn. And I knew I had a secret weapon up my sleeve: genuine MicroModal, this incredible fabric I’d stumbled upon while living over in America.
That material was always going to be the hero. But it’s more than just the fabric itself.
It’s every stitch. Every design choice. Every tiny detail.
The stuff that turns daks from a daily necessity into a bit of everyday luxury.
My first thought was naturally about making them in Australia.
I would've loved to. Keep it all local.
But here’s the hard truth.
To make them here, to the standard I was chasing, the price per pair would’ve made your eyes water.
Then there’s the MicroModal itself. The good stuff, from Europe.
This isn't your average fabric; it's top-shelf.
Landing that in Oz, after shipping, import duties, GST on top of it all?
The numbers just didn’t stack up if I wanted them to be affordable for the average bloke.
And I’d learned pretty fast that not all "modal" is born equal.
I tried the knock-offs. The cheaper versions from various corners of Asia.
Honestly? Not even in the same ballpark.
Genuine Lenzing MicroModal – the stuff I use – is ridiculously soft. "Is this even legal?" kind of soft.
It breathes. Keeps you cool. Lasts. Holds its shape.
It’s made from sustainably sourced beechwood by people in Austria who actually care about the planet.
The imitations? They’d feel okay for a wash, maybe two.
Then they’d pill. Lose shape. Get scratchy.
No thanks. For Debriefs, it had to be the real deal. No shortcuts.
So, with Oz being a financial tightrope, and cheap fabric a definite no-go…
My hunt for the right factory went global.
This wasn’t just about finding four walls and some sewing machines.
I needed a team that got it.
Understood my obsession with quality (I’m a perfectionist through and through).
Could handle premium European fabrics like they were precious gold.
And wouldn’t try to pull a swifty to save a few cents.
I spent a solid year firing off emails, on calls at stupid hours, looking at more samples than I care to remember.
I learnt a lot during that period.
And then, Turkey.
It might not be the first place you think of.
But these guys? They’ve got textile history running through their veins. Generations of it.
This isn’t some new, born yesterday operation.
They’re known for top-quality garments, especially for the picky European market.
They’ve got the skills, the gear, and a real pride in their work. Plus, being close to Europe for materials doesn't hurt.
My first chats with the Turkish team were a refreshing change.
No just nodding along. They asked smart questions.
They understood the tiny details of working with high-performance fabrics.
They had the machines, sure. But more importantly, they had artisans.
People who knew how to make stitching disappear. How to cut fabric so it just fits.
How to craft a waistband that feels like a gentle hug, not a python.
They cared about the small stuff as much as I did.
Were they the cheapest? Not a chance. Not even close.
But this was an investment. In quality. In consistency.
In a partnership with people as hell-bent on making something exceptional as I am.
They knew I wasn't just trying to fill an order. I was trying to build the best.
So, "Made in Turkey." Now you know the story.
It’s a deliberate choice I made.
A choice for quality fabric. For skilled hands. For product integrity.
It’s about working with people who share my values. Who go the extra mile.
It means I can back every single pair of Debriefs, knowing they’re crafted right.
From the world’s best materials, by people who really know their stuff.
And that, really, is what Debriefs is all about.
